I even refrained from expressing my opinion on Darrell Issa (which would have included the phrase “notorious scumbag”) because he is doing God’s work here.
How I Will Make This Holiday Special
Or I want to win a Doctor Who hoodie so let me wax poetic about the holidays.
Like a lot of people, when I got older the holidays (in my case Christmas) lost its magic. It was a hassle to go find a present for family members that may or may not like it, and the weather in the midwest can suck so driving to holiday events was a hassle and stressful.
Then my daughter was born.
The first few years the magic of Christmas was doing things for her that eventually I knew would pan out and she would be excited about. But as an infant she didn’t care so much about.
Now, every year is a special treat with my daughter. Christmas Eve is spent watching Santa on NORAD getting excited as he gets closer. We’ll also play board, card, and Wii games and finally have a big dinner of (usually) steak and shrimp and whatever else we want. And then we’ll sit down and watch A Christmas Story on DVD before she gets milk and cookies out for Santa and then is off to bed and we wait forever to make sure she’s asleep before we get her presents out, and let Santa do his thing.
Each year the goal is to make sure she can look back on Christmas as a child and know just how much her Mom and I love her, and how we went out of our way to make her the center of attention.
Why all of this on Christmas Eve? Because Christmas Day is a hectic ball of running. Up early with her for Christmas morning we have to then get ready and run off to family Christmas with the in-laws before getting home and calling family who’s far away and sharing what Christmas we can with them through the phone and Skype. It’s wonderful and magical and I wouldn’t trade Christmas Day, but Christmas Eve is the day we set aside for the nuclear family. For us to celebrate our love for each other and make sure we have time together that we can look back on and remember…and look forward to next year.
